This trip was huge undertaking for us as an organization, but thanks to some fabulous planning and execution by our missionary team, we were able to reap huge rewards! Almost our entire team traveled on this outreach, even some from neighboring bases, which has never happened in my three years here.
Our team was about 70 people, traveling on three boats for almost eight hours to arrive in this local. We had doctors, nurses, a midwife, nurse practitioners, dentists, dental assistants, missionaries, boat captains and crew, cooks, pastors, and various other support personnel. To say that least, we were a diverse group, coming from all over the world, including Singapore, India, Malaysia, Nigeria, England, Denmark, Canada, Brazil, and the United States. I could even be missing some!
We attended over 3,000 people in our five days in the community! People came from over a dozen communities in the interior regions of that area. Needless to say, we made an impact, and for sure left an impression that will not soon be forgotten!
We arrived in Curuá to a display of fireworks! Quickly we got to work unloading supplies and equipment to be used in the clinic before hitting the hammocks for the night. Our daily routine didn't change much, four to five hours of clinic in the morning, a short lunch break and rest back on the boat, and then back to the clinic for another four hours! It was overwhelming at times to see the HUNDREDS of people waiting in line to be attended! People from the surrounding area would arrive in the wee hours of the morning, just to get a place in line.
And beside us, the local church, working diligently to share the gospel with EVERY person to come through. They did evangelism, held services in the evening, showed films, and served food. And God blessed their efforts with a move of His Spirit, bringing salvation to over 300 people!
Pray with us for the local church to be faithful in following up with all of these new believers! It’s sure to be another daunting task, as many of them are from communities that do not yet have churches planted. But our goal is to not leave one soul unaccompanied, but that every one would be discipled! Pray again with us for the sanctification of these new believers as they return home and begin their life with God. And also for grace and provision in the lives of those leaders responsible for caring for these new sheep!
Sorry for the lack of pictures, but we were so busy working every day that I hardly had time to take any! Here are a few from my phone.
